National Reconciliation Week

This week, Peninsula Grammar proudly recognises National Reconciliation Week. It’s a time for all Australians to reflect, learn and grow in our understanding of the histories, cultures and contributions of First Nations peoples, and to take meaningful steps forward together.

As part of our recognition, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags will be flown each day to act as a powerful and visible symbol of our commitment to reconciliation. These flags will serve as daily reminders of the importance of respect, recognition and connection.

Throughout the week, students will take part in classroom conversations and cultural learning experiences to deepen understanding. A key focus will be on exploring the difference between a Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgement of Country. This includes building awareness of the meaning of ‘Country’ as understood by First Nations peoples, as a living, spiritual connection to land, water, sky and community. The Indigenous Map of Australia will support this learning, helping students explore the rich diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, including the mobs represented within our own school community.

A variety of shared activities will bring the school community together in reflection and celebration. Students will participate in lunchtime Indigenous games, and staff will gather for a morning tea featuring Indigenous ingredients and teas, offering a meaningful opportunity for cultural sharing. The screening of Like My Brother, a film about four Tiwi Island girls who dream of playing AFLW, will invite students to reflect on identity, determination and community through storytelling.

In sport, Saturday 31 May will mark Peninsula Grammar’s Reconciliation Round, where all matches will begin with an Acknowledgement of Country. AGSV Firsts teams across all schools will wear Indigenous-themed uniforms to recognise the occasion. Peninsula Grammar’s own uniform design will tell a unique story of reconciliation, blending the colours of land and sea with the school’s blue to symbolise unity, harmony and connection.

Boarding students also attended the AFL’s Dreamtime at the ‘G match, offering a special opportunity to participate in this important national event. Reconciliation ribbons will be sold throughout the week to raise awareness and encourage involvement, and a guest speaker will visit the school to share personal reflections and insights that will help deepen our collective understanding.

National Reconciliation Week at Peninsula Grammar will be a time of learning, respect and meaningful action. We invite all members of our school community to reflect on the spirit of reconciliation, to engage with the conversations taking place throughout the week, and to continue walking forward together with purpose and respect.
