Excellence in Music

Music plays a central role in the educational and cultural life of Peninsula Grammar.

Students experience an abundance of opportunity to excel in music. From curriculum based instrumental programs to private lessons, ensembles and weekly performances. We foster a wide range of genres including musical theatre, jazz, classical and contemporary pop/rock led by an industry leading music faculty.

Our Music program stands as a vibrant and dynamic force, inspiring students across all year levels to develop their musical talents and embrace their passion for performance. With more than 350 individual lessons per week, 26 student ensembles and numerous performances, averaging to one concert per week, we are proud to offer an enriching environment where music and creativity thrive.

BENEFITS OF LEARNING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT

Peninsula Grammar places a high value on musical activities, viewing them as essential for students’ intellectual, emotional, and personal growth. Research supports that music enhances children’s developmental pathways and positively impacts overall cognitive abilities, including:

  • Cognitive Development – Playing an instrument enhances memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. It also improves literacy and numeracy by teaching children to read music and understand rhythms.
  • Motor Skills – It helps develop fine motor skills through the precise movements required to play an instrument, and gross motor skills through activities like drumming or dancing.
  • Emotional Expression – Music provides a healthy outlet for children to express their emotions and can be a therapeutic way to process feelings.
  • Social Skills – Playing in a group or ensemble fosters teamwork, communication, and cooperation. It also helps children build friendships and social connections.
  • Discipline and Patience – Learning an instrument requires regular practice and perseverance, teaching children the value of hard work and dedication.
  • Creativity – Music encourages creativity and innovation, allowing children to experiment with sounds and compositions.
  • Self-esteem – Achieving musical milestones and performing can boost a child’s confidence and sense of accomplishment.
  • Stress Relief – Playing music provides a calming and therapeutic escape from daily pressures.
  • Enhanced Creativity – Music lessons encourage creativity, spilling over into other aspects of life.
  • Cultural Awareness – Through music, children can explore different cultures and histories, gaining a deeper appreciation for diversity.
