As Year 12 students approach the final examination period of their VCE journey, it is natural for students, parents, and teachers to focus their attention on subject knowledge and skill mastery for exam preparation. While deep content knowledge and skill development is essential, and we thank our parents and teachers for partnering with our students to assist them with those final preparations, we also recognise it is only part of the equation for student success. Research and experience consistently show that the mindset students apply to their examinations is a critical differentiator.
Success in VCE exams is not determined solely by what students know, but also by how they think. High-performing VCE students are therefore united by a growth mindset: the belief that their intelligence and ability can be developed through effort, learning, and perseverance. This mindset, popularised by psychologist Carol Dweck, transforms the way students interpret challenges – not as a judgement of their abilities, but as opportunities for growth and learning. Rather than internalising challenge as a personal flaw, high-performing students see it as valuable feedback. They reflect on what strategies were effective, seek constructive feedback, and adjust their approaches accordingly. This approach not only builds resilience but also fosters a sense of agency and optimism.
Throughout the year, our VCE students have demonstrated resilience by responding thoughtfully to SAC results and challenging practice examinations, as well as through their broader educational experiences. We are incredibly proud of the way our students have consistently focused on key reflective questions in response to each opportunity they have had – “What can I learn from this? How can I improve next time?” These questions are at the heart of a growth mindset and are essential for continuous improvement.
As students sit their final examinations, we encourage them to leverage their growth mindset—the belief that they can achieve and be successful, because mindset is the ultimate advantage. American businessperson, Henry Ford, once said: “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.”
It is vital that the support networks surrounding our students – families, teachers, and peers – continue to foster a positive mindset during this intense period. Celebrate effort, improvement, and perseverance, and remind students that the work they have done throughout the year, and in the years leading up to these exams, has prepared them well. With the right mindset, combined with mastery of the required knowledge and skills, our students are well positioned to succeed.
We extend our best wishes to all Units 3-4 students as they undertake their final examinations. May you approach this milestone with confidence, knowing that your efforts are seen and that we are proud of you!
