Boarding FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my child gets sick?

It is possible that each Boarder may become ill during their time at Peninsula Grammar, even with a mild virus such as a common cold. All Boarding staff have first aid qualifications to support students if they become ill. During the week, Boarders are assessed by the school nurse if they are unwell and are seen by a local doctor if needed.

The School has access to local doctors that speak English, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Cantonese to support students as needed. Peninsula Grammar is located near the major Victorian Hospital, Frankston Hospital in the event of emergency. All international students are expected to have Overseas Student Health Cover and all students, domestic or international, must have Ambulance Cover / Insurance.

What happens in the Boarding House on the weekends?

Weekends are a mix of study, play and sport at Peninsula Grammar. As sport is compulsory, Boarders usually play school sport on Saturday, either at Peninsula Grammar or another AGSV school and are transported there by school bus. Each weekend, there is a number of in-house and external activities that students can participate in, including movies, ice skating, theatre trips and much more. Students are also expected to complete homework and study as required throughout the weekend.

Will my child have their own room?

At Peninsula Grammar, we encourage students to live alongside others from around the world and to develop skills such as sharing and considering the needs of others as well as their own. Younger students usually share a room with one other Boarder, while Year 12 students are prioritised to have their own rooms.

Is the Boarding House at Peninsula Grammar safe?

Peninsula Grammar is located in a very safe area of Melbourne, Victoria, on the Mornington Peninsula. The school has 24-hour patrolled security, CCTV cameras, and staff available to students 24/7. Peninsula Grammar takes pride in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of every student in its care. We use a student management system, Reach, to monitor the whereabouts of each Boarder.

Can my child leave the Boarding House?

Yes, Boarders are permitted to leave the Boarding House on weekends and after school to visit age-appropriate locations. They must always travel with other students and never alone. Students in Years 11 and 12 are allowed to travel to the city on weekends, but always in the company of other students.

Many of our Boarders have family in Melbourne and the surrounding areas. With permission from the Head of Boarding, they may visit these family members on hosted leave. However, it is important that the hosting family member collects and returns them to the Boarding House in person.

Are parents able to visit?

We love welcoming parents and other family members from all over the world when they visit Melbourne! With advance notice to the Head of Boarding, family members are welcome to dine with the boarders. Boarders may request leave from the Boarding House when their family is in Australia but are still expected to attend school as normal.

Can my child keep a car at Peninsula Grammar?

Yes, Boarders are permitted to keep a car on the grounds of Peninsula Grammar, provided they have a valid Australian driver’s licence and permission from their parents. Car keys must be stored in the Boarding House safe and are only given to boarders when they need to drive. With permission from the Head of Boarding, Boarders may drive to tutoring, study sessions, and other approved locations. However, they are not permitted to drive to social gatherings, parties, or to their VCE exams.
