Alumni Success Story: Flynn Leslie
Flynn Leslie: From Peninsula Grammar’s Courts to the AIS
At Peninsula Grammar, we take immense pride in watching our students discover their strengths and pursue their passions. Few journeys capture the spirit of our community quite like that of Flynn Leslie. His path from a Year 10 volleyball match to a place at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) is an inspiring reflection of determination and support.
Flynn’s introduction to volleyball began during a P.E class round robin in 2022, where his potential was quickly recognised. Encouraged by Deb Gardener, Director of Sport, and with the support of his friends, Flynn accepted the challenge of joining our First Volleyball team. His commitment and enthusiasm set him apart, and he soon developed his skills both at Peninsula Grammar and with the Junior Mornington Volleyball Club.
As Flynn progressed, he truly embodied our School’s values, balancing academic responsibilities while making significant contributions to the First team. His strong performances on court and willingness to embrace every opportunity saw him receive a Merit Award in 2023. During that year, Flynn’s capabilities gained wider recognition, leading to selection for the Victorian State Team trials. It was there he caught the eye of recruiters from the National Development Program, operated by Volleyball Australia, opening doors to elite training camps and new horizons.
Peninsula Grammar is committed to nurturing potential at every level. Our staff encouraged Flynn as he took part in high-level training through the National Development Program, the Greater Melbourne Volleyball Academy and later, opportunities with the national squad. Whether representing Australia on tour in Thailand or captaining our First team, Flynn led by example, earning Full Colours for Volleyball and representing the AGSV against the APS. Each achievement was celebrated by our school community.
Flynn’s story is one of taking every chance and giving back, a hallmark of Peninsula Grammar’s holistic approach. In his final year, Flynn was offered a full-time place at the Australian Volleyball Academy at the AIS in Canberra, an outstanding achievement for any student-athlete. The move was a proud milestone for Flynn, his family and Peninsula Grammar.
Recent months have seen Flynn add even more accolades: part of the gold medal-winning Victorian Under-21 team at the Australian Junior Championships in Adelaide, and selection to train with the Senior Volleyroos squad ahead of the Asian Volleyball Cup.
At Peninsula Grammar, we celebrate Flynn’s achievements not only for the recognition they bring, but because they demonstrate what is possible when student aspirations are backed by a supportive school environment. Flynn’s journey shows that when talent, work ethic and community encouragement come together, there is no limit to what our students can achieve. We wish Flynn every success as he continues to reach new heights, and look forward to following his continued progress with pride.
