Old Peninsula Football Club Claims Historic First Premiership

History was made as the Old Peninsula Football Club (OPFC), known as the Pirates, secured its first-ever senior premiership since the club’s inception in 1980.

In a dominant performance, the Pirates triumphed over the previously undefeated Ormond, marking a momentous occasion for the players, supporters, and the wider Peninsula Grammar community.

The Grand Final, held at Box Hill City Oval, saw the Pirates deliver an outstanding display of teamwork and skill, culminating in a resounding 127-53 victory. The win was a fitting reward for a season of dedication and hard work, and it ensures the club’s promotion to the Premier C division next season.

The team was led superbly by coach Brendan Dunne and captain George Fletcher, both proud Peninsula Grammar alumni. Their leadership was instrumental in guiding the team through the season and to this historic achievement. Fletcher also made a significant contribution on the scoreboard, kicking three crucial goals in the final.

The connection to Peninsula Grammar was a strong theme throughout the day. Nathan Jones, former Melbourne captain and current coach of Peninsula Grammar’s First XVIII football team, was a star performer, kicking an impressive six goals. His experience and finishing skills were vital to the team’s success. Adding to the accolades, former student Hugh Peacock was awarded the best-on-ground medal for his exceptional performance in the decider.

This victory is a testament to the strong and enduring relationship between the Old Peninsula Football Club and Peninsula Grammar. The club has expressed its sincere gratitude to Principal Leandra Turner, Peninsula Grammar, and the Old Peninsula Grammarians’ Association (OPGA) for their unwavering support throughout the season.
