Peninsula Grammar’s Brownlow Breakfast: Celebrating Community and Football Excellence
On Friday 19 September, Peninsula Grammar will host its much-anticipated Brownlow Breakfast at the Mornington Racecourse. This annual gathering brings together football enthusiasts and members of the Peninsula Grammar community for a unique and memorable experience centred around Australia’s favourite sport.
Celebrating its 26th edition in 2025, the Brownlow Breakfast has become a cherished tradition, beginning in 1999 with the school’s alumnus, Peter Mitchell (Class of 1977) as host. The inaugural event featured notable guests such as AFL umpire John Russo and St Kilda star Nathan Burke, setting the tone for what would become a long-standing celebration of football heritage and community spirit. The event has been proudly sponsored by the Lamattina family since its inception. They have supported the Breakfast for the past two and a half decades, contributing to its continued success and the strength of the Peninsula Grammar community.
Over the past 26 years, the Breakfast has welcomed a stellar lineup of AFL personalities who have enriched the event with their humour, stories, and expert knowledge. Among the distinguished guests have been fan favourites like Matthew Richardson, famed for his spectacular marks and fearless play; Shane Crawford, a Brownlow medallist and four-time Best and Fairest winner; Nick Riewoldt, revered St Kilda captain and six-time Best and Fairest recipient; and Greg Williams, dual Brownlow medallist known for his exceptional skills and leadership. The Breakfast has also honoured legends like Bob Skilton OAM, one of only four players to win three Brownlow Medals.
More recent speakers have included celebrated players such as Dale Thomas, Steele Sidebottom, Abbey Holmes, and Lachie Whitfield, ensuring the event continues to reflect the broad diversity and evolution of the game.
The 2025 Brownlow Breakfast panel promises to captivate attendees with insights from four remarkable AFL figures: Dylan Buckley, former Carlton and GWS midfielder known for his pace and pressure; Trent Cotchin, three-time premiership captain of Richmond and 2012 Brownlow winner; Kate McCarthy, decorated AFLW player renowned for her speed and resilience; and Zach Merrett, Essendon captain recognised for his leadership and elite midfield performances.
This event represents more than just football conversation. It is a vibrant gathering where Peninsula Grammar families connect, celebrate a shared passion and look forward to the excitement of the Brownlow Medal Count and AFL Grand Final. The Breakfast offers a unique blend of expert commentary, personal stories, and community spirit. It’s an experience that resonates well beyond the footy field.
As the Peninsula Grammar community prepares to come together once again, the Brownlow Breakfast stands as a proud testament to the school’s commitment to fostering connection, sporting excellence and tradition.
