Understanding science helps us understand the world

The Science Department is a practical based, creative environment, where students learn through exploring the relationship between science and their everyday world.

Philosophy

The Science curriculum at Peninsula Grammar aims to provide students with a range of skills and knowledge that will enable them to develop a better understanding of the world around them.

Students should have the ability to formulate hypotheses, design and carry out strategies to test them and to evaluate the results.

Students will develop basic laboratory techniques that they can use to work safely and efficiently to investigate a problem. The curriculum has been developed to achieve the broad aims of preparing students for the science associated with everyday life and to prepare students for careers in science.

The faculty aims to develop student’s abilities to ask questions and to see the relevance of science to both the local environment and society in general.

In all aspects of the science taught at Peninsula Grammar, students are encouraged to look at the ethics associated with their work and those of others working in science.

Science is becoming associated with many aspects of life and it is important for our students to develop the ability to look at science in society and use the knowledge gained from science education to help make reasoned decisions.

Innovations

The Science Department encourages students to excel in an exciting, innovative and creative environment by allowing them to explore and question the relationship between science and their everyday world. Our focus is on practical-based, hands-on activities. Our state of the art VCE laboratories allow students to enjoy their practical work in an environment that prepares them for future studies in the Sciences.
