New Careers website

We are very excited to announce a new Careers website that students and parents can access. Career Tools is a system designed to provide information to students and parents on a large range of topics including Apprenticeships, University courses and applications, Scholarships, resumes and VCE. It also acts as a portal where students can link with various organisational websites such as University websites, TAFE, The Defence Forces and a number of Government Agencies such as Centrelink.

Students and parents can easily make appointments with any of the Careers Staff through this website.

Careers Library

Students have open access to all TAFE and university course guides, VET information, Job Guides, information about getting a job and specific vocational advice. The Careers Library is located within the Careers Office, Room ZC207 within the Zammit Centre.

Individual Careers Counselling

The Careers Team meets with all Senior Students, to develop pathways plans for the future. This process involves identification of students’ interests and abilities; planning for Year 11 and 12 programs; organising for the transition from school to further training, education or work; and tertiary applications.

Careers Newsletter – ‘Careers News’

Careers News is a fortnightly newsletter that can be accessed via Zenith. Careers News is the easiest way to stay informed about specific careers information pertinent to students; as well as gain details about a range of careers events occurring throughout the year.

VCE and Careers Expo

The VCE and Career Expo is held annually. This is an important event for current Year 10 and 11 students and parents to attend to assist in planning for subject selection and post school options. Students will receive detailed information on VCE subject areas and options for Years 11 and 12. Representatives from selected TAFE, universities and private colleges will provide information and advice about post-secondary options for all Senior Years students.

Year 9 Pathways Program

The Pathways Program forms an integral part of the development process for Year 9 students. Throughout their Pathways week, students will participate in a series of careers orientated classes which include vocational testing, identification of potential future pathways, recognition of prerequisites in subject selection; as well as visits to a range of tertiary institutions and workplaces.

Year 10 Morrisby Vocational Testing/Interview Skills Workshop

Year 10 students will complete the Morrisby Vocational Testing and will receive a report providing them with data on their potential, their strengths and talents as well as their career interests and some aspects of personality. It will allow them to explore both VCE subjects and courses/careers that match the data they receive on their report. They will also be given access to a range of valuable career resources. On the same day as the testing, students will participate in a workshop on interview skills which will provide them with valuable information on the best way to prepare for and participate in job interviews.

Work Experience

Work experience provides Years 10, 11 and 12 students with the opportunity to experience a workplace of interest and to participate in the broader ‘world of work’. Work experience can be undertaken during school holiday periods and needs to be coordinated through the Careers office.

Year level information sessions and assemblies

At pertinent times throughout the year, students will attend information sessions hosted by the Careers Team, to address particular issues. This includes information sessions on subject selection, University entrance, work skills and the changing world of work.

TOPSA Connecting Careers Event

Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will be given the opportunity to participate in workshops with ex-students from our school who are in a range of different careers. Our alumni will provide a valuable insight into their chosen career and the training involved in preparing for a career in their industry.

Parent Career Planning Information Sessions

Parents will be invited to participate in evening workshops focused on assisting their children in making career decisions. These will be run by our Careers Team.

Job Preparation

Whether students are seeking part-time work at weekends or looking to gain a full-time job at the end of their schooling, the Careers Team can assist. It may be to help construct a resume and application letter or to gain tips on going for their first job interview. Employers regularly contact the Careers Office to advertise jobs in the local area and students should keep an eye on Zenith and via email for details of these positions.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) Coordination

The School’s VET Coordination takes place from the Careers Office. The team are responsible for overseeing the overall operation of VET programs for our students; including enrolment co-ordination, liaison with training organisations; co-ordination of the Structured Work Placement Program; visits with employers; and Occupational Health and Safety Training.
